Josh Hartnett is back with his most high-profile leading role in years in the new trailer for M. Night Shyamalan's upcoming thriller Trap.

Hartnett, 45, initially seems like an ideal father figure in the trailer, as he's shown taking his excited daughter Jody to see a superstar pop artist perform at an arena.

But the two are revealed to be in the midst of a dangerous situation brewing at the stadium, and the trailer has a major twist — a dark secret that Hartnett's seemingly affable character is hiding.

The actor's new trailer arrives months after he made a rare public appearance at the SAG Awards, where he accepted an ensemble award for his acclaimed supporting performance in Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer, which helped to cement his new career revival.

The trailer for Trap arrives just over a year after Shyamalan's previous film, Knock At The Cabin, was released to largely positive reviews and a modest box office showing.

But then Hartnett and his daughter are seen parking and rushing to get to the Arena in time.

He jokes around and teases her as they make their way through security and find their floor seats for what she says is 'literally the best day of my life.'

But then he takes a break to chat with a stadium vendor (Jonathan Langdon), whom he asks about police trucks that are lined up outside and new security cameras being installed around the building.

'You know the Butcher? That freakin' nut job that goes around just chopping people up?' the vendor quizzes him. 'Well the Feds heard that he's gonna be here today. So they set up a trap for him.

He continues: 'This whole concert? It's a trap. They're watching all the exits and checking everyone who leaves. There's no way to get out of here.'

It's not long before the trailer's big twist is revealed: Hartnett's character is both a loving father and a serial killer known as the Butcher.

When he slips into a bathroom for a moment, he takes out his phone in the stall and logs into a security cam app, which shows a man that he has tied up and chained to a pole in a basement somewhere.
