Dua Lipa has revealed she had to take a social media break after a clip of her dancing became a meme.

The pop icon, 28, has spoken out about the time a clip of her dancing on stage during a 2017 concert went viral with fans likening her a pencil in a 'pencil sharpener'.

Dua just released her third studio album Radical Optimism said she found it 'humiliating' during a candid chat with The Guardian.

A specific comment fuelled further cruel troll comments, which said: 'I like her lack of energy, go girl give us nothing!', below the YouTube clip of her New Rules live performance at the 2018 BRIT Awards.

The catchprase then became a recurrent meme - and was also used to comment on other celebrities such as Blackpink, Taylor Swift, and Addison Rae.

'When people took that snippet of me dancing online and just turned it into a meme, and then when I won the best new artist Grammy and people were like, "She's not deserving of it, she's got no stage presence, she's not going to stick around", she said.

'Those things were hurtful. It was humiliating. I had to take myself off Twitter.'

The Don't Start Now songstress explained performing and writing songs was the thing that made her 'the happiest', yet it was making her 'really upset'  as people didn't seem to also notice everything she had been working now.

'In the public eye, I was figuring out who I was as an artist, as a performer. All that was happening while I was 22, 23 years old and still growing up. You have to build tough skin. You have to be resilient,' Dua added.

The Grammy winner also said she while it never got to a point where she 'couldn't get out of bed', it certainly when her emotions felt the 'most heightened'.

But as Dua built up her name, reputation and skills, the British-Albanian star said she felt 'a real kick' after her 2019 single Don't Start Now came out.

The Barbie actress didn't shy away from admitting a lot of people started changing their opinion on her performance skills after that, making her feel she finally proved them wrong.

Dua also discussed with Apple her dilemmas with fame and how she deals with hateful comments, admitting her rise to stardom over the years has not been easy.
