Nathan Chester received roaring applause and high praise from his coach John Legend on Monday's episode of The Voice that featured performances by the Top 12.

The 28-year-old singer from Chicago was the last to perform during the live two-hour episode on NBC.

Nathan took on the Jackie Wilson hit song '(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher' and John, 45, during rehearsal said he was looking forward to Nathan giving it his 'own flair'.

John asked if the song had any meaning in particular for him and Nathan said he's been listening to the song since he was a boy.

'My mom brought me around this music,' said Nathan, who was shown thanking his mother for all her support.

John encouraged him to give his performance some dynamics and variation and Nathan considered changes to his ending.

'Nathan is everything you want in a soul singer, and I'm excited to see what he does with this song, and I'm excited to see what America thinks about it,' John said.

Nathan delivered with a spirited rendition that showed off his range and stage presence.

'That is how you close it out!,' exclaimed host Carson Daly, 50.

The audience erupted in applause and loudly showed their support for Nathan.

'I can't talk. The crowd is too loud. I can't talk. They love him too much! They love him too much!,' John said.

The crowd simmered down a bit and Carson told John to continue.

'I just love the clarity of your vision. You knew who you wanted to be when you came to this show. You knew before you came to this show, and I love your commitment. Every time you come out here, you give everything. You sing amazingly. You perform amazingly,' John said as the crowd cheered again. 'I love working with you, Nathan. It's such a pleasure.'
