Julie Bishop looked every inch the fashion icon this week as she was awarded Japan's highest honour, the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun.

The former Minister for Foreign Affairs, 67, looked a vision of beauty in a deep purple satin gown as she stepped out at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo on Thursday. 

With her new beau Stephen Gray on her arm in a series of Instagram photos, the politician received the award from Prime Minister Kishida Fumio during a very exclusive ceremony. 

'Honoured to receive Japan's highest award, Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun, at an investiture ceremony with His Majesty the Emperor and Prime Minister Kishida at the Imperial Palace Tokyo today,' Julie captioned her post.

Julie's stunning frock featured a conservative cape and paired perfectly with her purple pumps as she accessorised with a chunky diamond bracelet.
