Coronation Street fans predict the worse for Rita Sullivan

Coronation Street fans are fearing the worst for long-serving character Rita Sullivan following Monday night episode. 

The Cobbles favourite (Barbara Knox) forgot that she had purchased a mug for her colleague Gemma (Dolly-Rose Campbell) - causing fans to predict a heartbreaking dementia story line.

Viewers flocked to Twitter to admit they would be 'unable to handle' the 'worrying' sequence of events for Rita - with others hinting at the possibility of tears if she was diagnosed with the disorder.

The scene saw Rita, who is the owner of The Kabin, forgetting that she had bought Gemma a Little Miss Trouble mug as she asked her where she got it from. 

'You did!' Gemma replied, to which Rita remarked: 'Oh yes of course I did, silly me.'

The hard to ignore scene was quickly noted by fans who took to Twitter to raise their concerns: 'Oh. Rita forgot she got Gemma's cup. Maybe she's going to get Alzheimer's or dementia. #Corrie
