Strictly confirmed the news on their Twitter page on Sunday morning, during his weekly Channel 4 magazine show with co-host Tim Lovejoy.

Alongside a photo of the chef, the exciting announcement read: 'Ready to cook up a treat on the dance floor, Simon Rimmer is our 7th celebrity for 2017! Welcome @simonrim!'

A self-professed fan of the show, Simon himself admitted he was extremely 'excited' but also 'terrified' at the thought of hitting the dance floor, clad in sequins and fake tan.

He said: 'I am so excited, terrified and proud to be invited to be part of Strictly 2017. I've always been a HUGE fan of the show.

'When I put on my sequins and hit the floor it will genuinely be my very first time dancing ballroom and latin.'

Despite his lack of experience however, the Merseyside native admitted that he was ready to give it his best shot, in the hope of lifting the famed glitter ball trophy.

'Nobody will try harder, have more fun or get more out of it than me,' he added. 'I can't wait!'

Simon marks the seventh celebrity confirmed for the series so far - with Holby City actor Joe McFadden, 41, announced on Saturday morning.

On Thursday, Gemma was announced and said of her new gig: 'I am really flattered they have asked me, I never thought the words would be coming out of my mouth. I am more likely to fit in on a show like Gladiators, but that's why I wanted to do it, it's a challenge.'

The 15th series of the BAFTA award-winning entertainment show produced by BBC Studios will return in the autumn on BBC One, and has slowly been releasing the line up as the week has gone on, with the latest news revealed on Thursday on BBC Breakfast.

She also apologised for lying to her family, who had heard rumblings of the news, which she had denied.

Both Naga and BBC weather girl Carol Kirkwood - who have both appeared on Strictly in the past - offered Gemma advice, telling her to 'remember to just enjoy it'.

She added: 'I am honoured to be asked and so thrilled to be joining the show. I'm beyond excited and incredibly nervous but I am looking forward to learning a new skill in ballroom and Latin dancing and taking on this new challenge.'

Gemma is a British actress and radio presenter, well known for playing Lisa Hunter in Channel 4's Hollyoaks between 2001 and 2005.

Other TV appearances include The Bill, Law and Order and Waterloo Road. In February this year, Gemma joined the Key 103 breakfast team in Manchester hosting the breakfast show from 6am to 10am on weekdays.

She's also a successful model and appeared on I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here in 2007, where she was the seventh to be voted off the show.

Despite taking some disco lessons when she was a child, Gemma is completely new to professional dance routines: 'I did disco dancing when I was 10 until 11, but that was high kicks and cartwheels. A far as traditional Ballroom, Latin and Jazz anything like that I don't have a clue.'

She plans on racing from her breakfast show to make sure she gets as much rehearsal time as possible. 'After the show at Key 103 I will have to dash to the studio and try and dance my socks off,' she said.

Gemma is a self-confessed tomboy and has recently taken on an intensive fitness challenge, which she has been documenting on her blog and her social media.

She's also been practising walking in stilettos at home to get herself ready for the extravagant outfits the show has become known for: 'I dress like a 14-year-old boy in work, I am a trackies and Converse kind of girl, but I have been wearing stilettos around my house. I don't know how women do it all the time. I am not graceful.'

One thing she isn't looking forward to is the famous spray tans. 'I've had one spray tan in my life at a charity event, because it was for charity I said yes. It stunk and when I woke up it was all over my bed. So I'm not looking forward to the spray tans,' she said.

She added: My aim it's just to not go out first, I would love to get to the final, absolutely.'

Although Gemma would be happy just to walk away with a new skill: 'For me, learning to dance itself is a milestone. So if I come away from the experience being able to say I can dance, then that in itself is great.

'It's such a varied audience, kids all the way up to nanas can watch. It's secretly that one show everyone wants to do, so I feel very flattered they even asked me to be honest.

'It's going to be gruelling, it's going to be tiring, but its only 3 months so I'm going to make the most of it. Hopefully my gym sessions will pay off with my fitness levels. Fingers crossed I should be okay.'

On Wednesday, Ruth was revealed as the third star to sign up for this year's Strictly.

The big reveal came out on This Morning on Wednesday - the show Ruth, 57, co-presents with her husband Eamonn Holmes, alongside Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield.

Of the signing, she Ruth said: 'I have dreamt about doing Strictly for so long, I can't quite believe my dream has come true!'

She went on: 'The sum of my dance experience is throwing a few shapes at a party, I've never had a dance lesson in my life. Without doubt it will be the scariest yet most exciting thing I've ever done.

'It'll be a welcome change worrying about my next hot move instead of my next hot flush!'

The reveal took place on This Morning, with doors in the studio set up, each with a member of the show's on-screen talent standing by them as a cardboard cut-out.

Busy lady: Explaining how she'll manage the commitment, Ruth said 'I'd be working and then rehearsing in the afternoon'

Dream job: Of the signing, she Ruth said - 'I have dreamt about doing Strictly for so long, I can't quite believe my dream has come true'

Each door opened to tease who it was, with the likes of chef Gino D'Acampo and agony aunt Deidre Sanderst being teased as the potential contestant.

Finally, the grand reveal was made when Ruth came bursting out of the final door.

Eamonn shared a slight concern for his wife about her hectic lifestyle, worried that this will add even more to her very full plate. He was sure to assert, however, that he is in awe of his wife, dubbing her 'Leggy Langsford'.

'I'm so proud. I think you'll be an inspiration for older women everywher,' he said to his wife of seven years - who have been together for nearly two decades.

Explaining how she'll manage the commitment, Ruth said: 'I'd be working and then rehearsing in the afternoon.'

Wednesday's announcement comes as Eamonn took to Twitter earlier in the day to tease what was set to be revealed.

'On this morning's @thismorning we will be revealing who in the This Morning family will be part of this year's @bbcstrictly! Guess who?' he posted, sending his followers into a speculative tizz.

'Please be @RuthieeL she would be fab #winner,' came one fan's reply, as another posted: 'No prizes for guessing Ruth then?'

Another typed: 'This is so exciting!!!!! Really hope it's @RuthieeL.

Eamonn then tweeted that the 'odds [are] shortening on @Rylan and @Ginofantastico for @bbcstrictly. What do u think? [sic]'

After the cat was let out of the bag, he posted: 'My lovely @RuthieeL is taking to the @bbcstrictly dancefloor. Wish her well. I'm so proud....but nervous for her.'

Ruth has made no secret of the fact that she'd love to be on Strictly one day.

'I'm a massive fan and I'm always very flattered when my name is in the mix,' she told Express earlier this summer, hinting that she has been asked before. 'They haven't confirmed anything yet. If they asked me to do the show I would absolutely love to do it.'

She also said she wouldn't care which of the pro dancers she'd like to be partnered with. - simply that she is just excited to learn how to dance from a professional.

She also insisted that her husband is in the audience every week.

'What sort of marriage is this? I thought it was going to be me,' Eamonn joked after the announcement was made on Wednesday.

'It's definitely me. Every Saturday, you have to be there,' Ruth said. Eamonn quipped back: 'But what about the football? The start of the football season? I'm very, very pleased for you.'
