'Not a chance,' he declared.

Carragher and some fans quickly mentioned the points totals that City and Liverpool have reached in recent years gave their rivalry the edge, but Neville was having none of it.

'We were absolutely punch for punch, beating each other up off the pitch, on the pitch,' he added.

'The ferocity of the games, the unpredictability of the games. The length of the thing was seven years, four titles to United, three to Arsenal. It was a proper rivalry.'

Neville and Carragher may have disagreed on that one, but they did fall on the same side when discussing the legacies of Pep Guardiola and Sir Alex Ferguson.

Carragher asked Neville and the fans in attendance whether Guardiola will be seen as the greatest Premier League manager when he leaves English football.

Neville replied: 'Pep is unbelievable so we're arguing about something that's hypothetical, but I just think what Sir Alex Ferguson did for British football and the Premier League, I don't think can be surpassed.

'He was in the birth years of the Premier League, the football that was played, the electricity, the character and personality.'
