There is nothing more infuriating than being a goal down in the dying minutes of the game and watching as the opposition goalkeeper just won't let the ball go.

Fresh details of a trial to clamp down on that pestilent behaviour - goalkeepers wasting time - have emerged.

Goalkeepers are currently allowed to hold on to the ball for six seconds before needing to release it, otherwise a indirect free-kick should be awarded.

However, this is hardly enforced and goalkeepers have got away with hanging on to their precious cargo for upwards of 20 seconds to run down the clock.

Last month, it emerged that a trial will let them hold the ball for eight seconds, but if they overrun that, the referee will punish them.

The plan is to award a corner kick or throw-in to the opposition, as opposed to the current sanction of an indirect free-kick in the box.
