Northampton Saints and Harlequins won’t receive any additional financial revenue from European Professional Club Rugby (EPCR) despite them making the Champions Cup’s semi-finals.
And with the two Gallagher Premiership sides facing costly trips to Dublin and France respectively next month, they could end up with inflated bills from their prestigious matches with Leinster and Toulouse. Phil Dowson’s Saints reached the last four with a comfortable hammering of a second-string Bulls side from South Africa.
Harlequins, meanwhile, claimed an astonishing 42-41 victory over Bordeaux.
Both their qualifying for the tournament’s latter stages last weekend was a much-needed fillip for English club rugby which has had more than its fair share of struggles in the last two years.
But while reaching the semi-finals is undoubtedly a fine sporting achievement, it won’t actually prove to be a major money-making exercise for the two clubs.
