Jurgen Klopp insists everything that happens from here in his pursuit of perfection at Liverpool is a bonus - with the main goal for this season of qualifying for the Champions League again nearly achieved.
The Reds took a financial hit by not qualifying for Europe’s elite competition this season after a sub-par campaign last year that saw them finish fifth only because of a late-season flurry of 11 unbeaten games at the end.
But now Liverpool need a maximum of two wins to return to the Champions League and Klopp says that is a massive achievement that has left them in a good state to make a push for the ultimate prize of winning the Premier League title.
When asked on pre-season expectations, Klopp said: ‘I don’t limit us with negative expectations. It’s clear to get all the things going. We didn’t qualify for the Champions League last year, that’s financially a real problem for a football club like us.
‘So we built a squad to fight for the Champions League again. In the league, there are six or seven teams - Manchester City, Arsenal, Villa, Tottenham made the next step, then not really involved is Manchester United and Chelsea.
