The body responsible for policing doping in world sport is facing demands for total reform in the wake of the swimming scandal that saw 23 Chinese athletes secretly cleared to compete at the Tokyo Olympics despite positive drugs tests.
The United States Anti-Doping Agency issued a scathing attack on the World Anti-Doping Agency following the latter’s assertion on Monday that they would ‘not do anything different’ in their handling of the affair.
The astonishing case, which only came to light over the weekend, centres on 23 athletes who were exonerated by Chinese authorities after the banned substance trimetazidine was found in their samples in 2021, just months before the Olympics.
According to the New York Times, two of those swimmers went on to win gold medals, which included Wang Shun beating Team GB’s Duncan Scott to the 200m medley title, with WADA having opted against appealing the official Chinese explanation that the athletes were the victims of accidental contamination in a hotel kitchen. WADA have since said they were unable to conduct their own investigations on the ground at the time because of Covid.
