Gareth Southgate sprung a few surprises on Tuesday afternoon when he announced his provisional squad for this summer's European Championships

The England boss has often been slammed by his critics for selecting his favourites but courtesy was fell to the wayside as Marcus Rashford, Ben Chilwell  and Jordan Henderson were all made to scramble to sort summer holidays at short notice.

In their place came the likes of youngsters Adam Wharton, Jarrell Quansah and Curtis Jones.

Southgate has until June 7 to whittle his 33-man squad down to only 26, meaning there are a number of new faces who'll be desperate to stake their claim ahead of the tournament.

Here, Mail Sport takes a look at five of the young stars looking to force their way onto the plane this summer.

When signing his first professional deal with the club, Wharton admitted the moment was a proud for both him and his family.

'I’ve supported the club since I was a boy,' he told the club's website in 2022. 'My brother plays here as well, so it’s a huge moment for me and my family, and I’m just delighted to sign.

'I’ve met many great people throughout the years – coaches who have helped me massively – so I want to say a big thank you to all of them, and also to my parents, who have travelled up and down the country supporting me.'

The talented midfielder proved an instant hit with fans for his commanding performances and was soon on his way to the top-flight after the Eagles saw a £22.5million bid accepted for his services.

Since moving to Selhurst Park, Wharton has started 15 of his 16 league appearances, included all seven of Palace's final games in which they recorded six wins.

Jarell Quansah

Like Wharton, Quansah has enjoyed a meteoric rise this season, having only made his debut for Liverpool in August. Southgate's injury-enforced defensive headaches may see the 21-year-old earn his first England cap.

Should that happen, expect the tall and graceful defender to take it in stride just as he did in the Premier League.

The defender spent the second half of last season on loan in League One with Bristol Rovers, catching the eye and prompting then-boss Joey Barton to claim that he could play for the Three Lions in the future.

But Quansah's chance came after he had impressed Jurgen Klopp during the Reds pre-season tour enough for German to scrap plans to sign another defender.

'We got asked a lot about signing a centre-half and we were thinking about that as well, it’s not that we ignore potential issues or whatever.' Klopp said. 'When we saw him it was clear that we will not go for it, that we will have our own solution.'

Fast forward six months and he was coming on in extra-time of the Carabao Cup final against Chelsea, a game in which the Reds went on to win.

'It was crazy,' he told The Athletic. 'I walked in and my brothers said, ‘You’ve had Mum and Dad crying!’.

'It’s good
