Tottenham opened their 2017-18 Premier League account with victory over 10-man Newcastle at St James' park, after the Magpies lost Jonjo Shelvey in bizarre circumstances.

The midfielder was immediately dismissed for a rash stamp on the ankle of his fellow England star Dele Alli, while play had been stopped.

Alli would later go on to break the deadlock for Spurs, before defender Ben Davies sealed victory in the closing stages.
