Three men have been convicted of the repeated gang-rape of a British tourist in Benidorm.

They were jailed for eight-and-a-half years each after being found guilty of the horrendous crime following a trial at a court in Alicante, southeastern Spain.

The three sentencing judges concluded the men had raped their victim twice in just four hours - the first time in a park near a football ground in the Costa Blanca holiday resort and the second on waste ground near El Cisne flea market.

The judges ruled they took advantage of the fact she was under the influence of alcohol to carry out their sex crimes. The victim has been described as being in a state of 'semi-consciousness' at the time.

A court official said ahead of their trial: 'State prosecutors are seeking prison sentences of twelve years and three months for three men accused of sexually abusing a woman several times.'

He added: 'According to prosecutors they started a conversation
