The boyfriend of Longford woman Sarah McNally, who was stabbed to death at the Irish pub where she worked in New York, has been charged with her murder.

Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz said the attack was 'unprovoked' and one which has shocked the community.

'It was unprovoked and a devastating loss for the family,' she said.

'We are using every resource to make sure there is accountability.'

At about 6.30pm on Saturday, Mr Pieciak reportedly went into the pub and attacked Ms McNally.

When police arrived a short time later, Ms McNally was lying on the floor, bleeding from stab wounds to her neck.

Mr Pieciak suffered a self-inflicted knife wound, the court heard.

The accused is alleged to have proceeded to have cut his own throat 'several times' in the immediate aftermath of the incident before attempting to leave the bar.

A customer is said to have tried to detain Mr Pieciak after the alarm was raised and police arrived on the scene.

The charges also state police witnessed two knives on the ground after noticing Mr Pieciak drop them as he attempted to leave the bar.

Mr Pieciak reportedly refused to drop the murder weapons in his hands, forcing officers to use a stun gun on him.

Both individuals were taken to NYC Health and Hospitals in Elmhurst. Ms McNally was reportedly dead on arrival, just hours ahead of Easter Sunday.

Mr Pieciak appears to be recovering, though was initially listed as in critical condition.

Ms McNally, originally from Longford town, had been living in New York for a decade, and was living with her boyfriend at the time of her murder. She was stabbed in the neck at The Ceili House, Queens (pictured)
