Pothole vigilante goes on the warpath in Sussex: Enraged local uses spray paint ... trends now

A pothole vigilante has shown road rage of a different kind by spray painting the worst craters plaguing their local roads in a bid to shame the local council into fixing them.

Several circles around potholes seemingly emerged in Chichester, West Sussex, overnight Friday into Saturday morning, much to the amusement and bewilderment of residents.

A statement in pink also appeared on the pavement just outside the West Sussex County Council (WSCC) building in West Street, The Argus reports.

'WSCC: Fix the potholes! We pay taxes!!!', the graffiti reads.

Elsewhere, the vigilante has written: 'WSCC!!! The state of our roads!!!' and 'This road is an embarrassment to the city!!!'

In other locations, the potholes have been circled with green and pink spray paint, accompanied by the simple statement, 'Taxes!?'

Taking to Facebook, some users applauded the vigilante for taking action.

One said: 'Well done to whoever is doing this. I don't think you would have enough paint for the road through Donnington on the way to Selsey.'

Another wrote: 'Whoever is doing this, good on you but I think you are going to be busy for quite a few months.'

On X, formerly known as Twitter, user Ionut Lucian posted a photograph of one of the circled potholes and tagging WSCC and West Sussex Highways wrote: 'Things have gotten so bad people have started taking matters in their own hands. This is a nice welcome to Chichester!'

He added that a 'massive pothole' had damaged nine cars in recent days at a nearby bus stop.

MailOnline has contacted WSCC for comment.
