A 'brutal' house extension has caused outrage on social media and left locals wondering just what has to be proposed for planners to say No.

The property is part of a small estate, built in the 1930s, of detached and semi-detached houses close to Darley Park in Derby.

But it was owned by an Instagram 'influencer' who decided it needed a makeover.

The upshot certainly stood out. It was described by one local as a 'game of Jenga' with a mass of square wood panels where once stood a garage and bay windows.

The influencer then sold the property for £748,000 and moved to Guernsey leaving former neighbours of the quaint estate wondering just how it had all happened.

Retired cameraman Chris Hull, 70, said: 'It is indescribably bad. It is just completely out of keeping with everything else and I don't think it will age well. I am amazed it got through planning.'

Also amazed was Roger Bate, 78, a former house builder, who lives opposite.

'We were all left gobsmacked,' he said. 'We were fuming really. Twelve of us wrote to the local planners objecting strongly to what was proposed, saying they should scrap it, but we were out voted and told it was acceptable.

'They actually changed their plans half way through. Originally it did not feature the wood cladding but around here if you make changes to your plans you only have to notify adjacent properties.'

'The woman who did it, Kate, was very well connected and was an influencer. Everyone was telling her how wonderful it was. That's not how we felt.'

Mr Bate said the one success he and his fellow objectors had was in blocking plans for a roof terrace.

'This is an area of retired professional people,' he said. 'The terrace would have overlooked several houses.
