Meanwhile, a gently-spiced Merlot won the vote as the best accompaniment to a long and relaxing bath.

Prosecco appears to be the go-to option to add the necessary celebratory fizz for many milestones, making it the glass of choice for baby showers and bank holidays.

But when it gets to the most meaningful life changes only the best champagne will do for celebrating the arrival of a child and the end of a marriage.

And for those comforting a friend after a messy break-up, it appears sensible to keep an emergency bottle of full-bodied, fruity Chenin Blanc close at hand.
