Any chill in the air in England on Tuesday could not stop St George's Day celebrations as Morris dancers kicked off a day of festivities in honour of the nation's patron saint.

Flags flew across England despite the somewhat cold and miserable weather, with Brits doggedly carrying on with their celebrations.

Morris dancers from Ewell, Surrey, took over Leadenhall Market in central London in a long-standing tradition, performing their jigs in between pints of beer.

Elsewhere, a giant England flag measuring 60ft by 24ft was draped on the front of Nottingham Council House.

The flag, which was visited by Royal Society of St George member John Mellor, is believed to be the largest one in the country.

Public figures including the Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Labour Leader Sir Keir Starmer and London Mayor Sadiq Khan all posted on social media to mark the occasion, which always falls on April 23.

In recent years, the day has become a double celebration for patriotic Brits, as the Prince and Princess of Wales' son Prince Louis has his sixth birthday today.

This year there are increasing calls to make the day of celebration for England's patron saint a bank holiday.
