Illegal migrants facing Rwanda flights are skipping Home Office checks on their whereabouts to avoid being rounded up for removal.

Fears grew last night that thousands in Britain may have gone missing during the first three months of this year.

Figures, released in response to a Freedom of Information request, show 5,584 bailed migrants refused checks a total of 56,243 times between January 1 and March 31.

Some 1,633 Albanians, included in the Home Office Immigration Enforcement teams' tally, avoided 16,028 of the checks, which take place regularly by phone, over the internet, or face to face at police stations. The Government said in late February that more than 33,000 illegal migrants were then on immigration bail, and therefore liable to be removed to Rwanda.
