Rishi Sunak today lashed out at the 'chilling effect of cancel culture' in a speech to leading media bosses.

The Prime Minister used an address to a Society of Editors conference to warn against the 'shutting down of people's views'.

'If we value a liberal, pluralistic society, we cannot allow one group of people to say their experiences are more important than others,' Mr Sunak told the event.

The PM warned against the threat of new technology being used to 'peddle propaganda and false narratives' and the emergence of 'deep fakes'.

He said an 'axis of authoritarian states' in Russia, Iran, North Korea and China were 'growing more assertive all the time'.

Mr Sunak paid tribute to those who are 'suffering behind bars in the name of freedom and democracy' - such as Evan Gershkovich - across those nations.

And, in a light-hearted opening to his address, the 'devoted Swiftie' PM praised recent UK newspaper coverage of singer Taylor Swift's latest album.
