The 'incapable' Home Office should be split up after 'falling short' on immigration reform, ex-minister Robert Jenrick said today.
A major new think-tank study, co-authored by the former immigration minister, says the department is 'simply too unwieldy to function'.
It should become the Department of Border Security and Immigration Control, the report suggests, with remaining crime-fighting functions hived off to a new Department for Policing and National Security.
The recommendation comes 18 years after then home secretary John Reid described the Home Office as 'not fit for purpose', leading to it being split up in 2006.
The Home Office's prisons and courts responsibilities shifted to a newly-created Ministry of Justice the following year.

Dividing the Home Office again would mark the end of an historic department of state dating back to 1782.
Today's Centre for Policy Studies report also calls for a wide shake-up of immigration policy to slash the number of new arrivals amid increasing strain on the NHS, housing and roads.
The 115-page study says: 'Over the longer term, we need working institutions that can translate the will of Parliament and the public into action.
'The Home Office has fallen short on this front. It has proven itself simply too unwieldy to function effectively, and has been undermined by high levels of churn and a lack of institutional knowledge.
