A man accused of stabbing his ex-girlfriend outside a gym on Wednesday 'didn't read' the AVO conditions imposed on him before breaching them by approaching her.

Anthony Monteleone appeared in Manly court on Sydney's northern beaches on Friday on charges of wounding with intent to murder and breaching an apprehended violence order.

Just over a week before the alleged attack, Monteleone, 45, admitted that he had breached a non-contact order made by police to protect the woman.

On April 29, he pleaded guilty to two counts of breaching an AVO after allegedly harassing the woman with multiple phone calls from several different numbers.

Monteleone told police he didn't know he was breaching the no-contact order because he 'didn't read the conditions'.

The woman ordered Monteleone not to contact her again, the Daily Telegraph reported.

She contacted the police as she feared Monteleone might harm her and on April 20 a provisional order was made barring him from calling, texting or approaching her.

But four days later he started texting and calling her repeatedly over a period of about three days.

Among the voice messages Monteleone left were: 'Can you please talk to me, I won't bother you ever. Well I promise, I just want to speak to you. Can you call me back please? That's all I want. I just want
