Sir Keir Starmer would make Britain the 'soft touch of Europe' by scrapping the Rwanda scheme, Rishi Sunak has warned.

The Prime Minister claimed that, while the 'penny is dropping' across the continent on the need for a deterrent to stop illegal migration, Labour would incentivise people to come to the UK. Sir Keir has pledged to ditch the Rwanda flights and allow those arriving in the UK on small boats to apply for asylum.

But Mr Sunak said the Labour leader's proposal could lead to 'thousands' more people coming to Britain as several countries are looking at replicating Rwanda-style models. The PM was speaking yesterday on a visit to Vienna for talks with the Austrian chancellor Karl Nehammer.

Last week Austria was among 15 EU countries who warned that they would have to 'think outside the box' to tackle the root causes of irregular migration.
