A fire that broke out on Sunday afternoon in a building on Jean-Talon St. E. in east-end St-Michel district sent three people to hospital and forced the evacuation of four families.
The injuries are considered minor, and all three were hospitalized as a precaution, Montreal fire department battalion chief Christian Legault said late Sunday. One of the three is a pregnant woman who was anxious after being rescued, he said. A second person was also suffering from stress, while the third person inhaled some of the smoke, he added.
Forty firefighters responded to the fire just after 2:30 p.m.
It appears to have started between the first and second floor balconies, Legault said. The cause is as yet unknown, he added.
The apartments are above a restaurant just east of St-Michel Blvd.
It took firefighters two hours to put out the fire. The flames’ intensity caused damage to a residential building behind the building that was on fire, Legault said.
Damage, he said, is estimated at about $100,000.
