A 36-year-old man is in hospital in stable condition and two men in their 20s are in police custody after a fight broke out early Monday on Resther St. in the borough of Plateau Mont-Royal.

Police would not confirm a report that an attempt to steal an umbrella triggered the fight, which pitted two suspects aged 21 and 29 against the 36-year-old victim and his 31-year-old companion. However they did say both men in their 30s were injured with a blunt object during the altercation.

A section of Resther St. between Mont Royal Ave. and Du Bienville St. has been cordoned off as the investigation continues.
