A female motorist is in critical condition in hospital Monday morning after her SUV was struck by a freight train at a level crossing in the municipality of Saint-Télesphore.

The incident occurred about 3 a.m. on Highway 325. Provincial police think that the motorist’s speed was a factor in the accident, but are trying to determine whether she was unable to brake in time to avoid the train, or attempted to beat the train at the crossing.

Saint-Télesphore is about 80 kilometres west of Montreal, near the Ontario border.

Update: Orange line of the métro resumes service after early morning...
