A 'kind and generous' elderly man, 81, has been killed after he ran back inside his burning home after a fire tore through the property. 

Neighbours helped the 81-year-old man known only as Peter, to escape his home in Sydney's Upper North Shore shortly before 7pm on Monday but for unknown reasons he ran back inside.

The house was engulfed in flames and the roof was collapsed when fire crews arrived to the home on Blackburn Street in St Ives about 7pm.
