Security guard jailed for 'racist' assault still on bail

A security contractor jailed for an unprovoked 'racist' assault on an Asian woman walking her dogs on Sydney's north shore is still on bail more than two months after his sentencing.

Steven Burke, who has performed security work in Iraq, pleaded guilty to recklessly inflicting grievous bodily harm on Jing Song, 29, at Mosman last year.

Ms Song was walking her dogs with friend Yiran Guo, 26, about 11pm on October 3 when the two women say Burke yelled out comments including 'Asians should go home'.

Burke, who denied saying those words, punched Ms Song up to five times in the face and kicked her in the stomach, a court heard.

Downing Centre Local Court magistrate Karen Robinson jailed him on May 22 for at least nine months, noting Ms Jong's injuries and the women's account of the 'racial slur'.

But Burke was later released on bail pending an appeal to the NSW District Court, where he appeared briefly on Tuesday.

Ms Jong and Ms Guo had left their home with their dogs when Burke, who was walking his cocker spaniel, called out to them across Glover Street.

Ms Guo saw Burke approach from across the road, according to a police statement before the court.
