An off-duty police officer in Maryland shot and killed a suspected shoplifter on Tuesday after he allegedly attempted to steal laundry detergent.
The incident occurred at the Giant Food supermarket chain at U.S. 40 and Rolling Road at about 4.00am in Catonsville, according to CBS Baltimore.
Authorities say the officer, who was moonlighting as a security guard, confronted the unidentified man in the parking lot after he was seen stealing the item.

The man, whose identity has not been released, then got into the driver's seat of a car as the officer was confronting him.
The vehicle drove off and dragged the officer 100 feet before he pulled out his weapon and shot the suspected thief.
The man later died of his wounds at the scene of the incident. Another person sitting in the passenger seat of the car was taken to a nearby hospital and treated for shock.
According to a spokesperson with the Baltimore County police department, the officer said he used deadly force
