Burnham lifeguard has to be rescued by colleagues

A red-faced lifeguard had to be rescued by his own team - after he got trapped in mud on a beach. 

With the tide coming in, the joint RNLI, coastguard and Burnham search and rescue teams rushed to drag him and his stranded quad bike from the quagmire.

Watched by crowds of holidaymakers, he was saved after he got bogged down in the mud while he was patrolling the beach at Burnham-on-Sea, Somerset.

A spokesman for Burnham Coastguard said the man was 'embarrassed' and it should be a warning to others about how easy it is to get caught out on the beach.
