On the internet petition secures scrapping of yearly sheep race

Campaigners have got secured the scrapping of the sheep race after arguing this takes place without the animals’ consent.

Since the race within Moffat, Scotland, was initially run within 2012, knitted jockeys strapped in order to back of sheep as Dumfries and Galloway punters place wagers.

But an online petition phoning for it to be prohibited gained 83, 000 signatures upon the grounds that ‘no 1 asks the sheep’.

Quoted in The Times, the request says it’s wrong to power sheep to race and accuses organisers of ‘taking the mick’.

‘They’re made to run, generally they are chased to have them to run because My partner and i don’t believe they stepped on fantastic distances naturally.  

‘We are showing these sheep to entertain people and then we are slaughtering them and eating them. ‘

Organisers expressed ‘deep regret’ after being forced in order to scrap the race because these people refused Dumfries and Galloway council’s request that the animals possibly be licensed in line with typically the Performing Animals Act 1925.

A spokesman for Moffat Promotions Team said:  ‘The Moffat sheep competitions has become a firm fitting in the townâs calendar during the last five years and was the hugely successful fun day to get all from the family.

Animal Concern welcomed typically the scrapping, with a spokesman telling the noise of the ethnic background inflicted cruelty within the sheep.  

‘It might not seem very harsh but chasing sheep along city streets with thousands of persons noisily cheering them on leads to the animals fear and tension.

‘Iâm sure the good persons of Moffat can come way up with other ways to really encourage visitors without subjecting animals in order to unnecessary suffering.
