Bette Midler is facing furious backlash on social media, after taking a swipe at US First Lady Melania Trump, during which she made a crude comment about her body.
The 72-year-old singer and actress took to Twitter on Thursday with an offensive hashtag alongside a shot the Slovenia-born former model, 48, took for a 2000 British GQ spread, in which she displayed liberal amounts of flesh in a metallic swimsuit.
Veteran entertainer Midler put a spin on the eye-catching snapshot, writing, 'The dry cleaning bill for the upholstery on Air Force One must be insane. #FLOT*TS.'
Controversial: Bette Midler, 72, took to Twitter on Thursday with a vulgar hashtag alongside a shot Melania Trump took for a 2000 British GQ spread in a futuristic metallic swimsuit
The punchline drew a litany of negative responses from people of both political affiliations, as they responded with strong objections to her jibes.
One user who identified as a 'liberal feminist' told the Grammy winner that Melania's past modeling work 'should NOT matter' when it comes to contemporary political issues involving her and her husband, President Donald Trump.
'I am tired of seeing people denounce her for having been a nude model, which has nothing to do with her FLOTUS work nor her involvement in this administration. Stay on message!' the user told Midler.
Feedback: Many Twitter users complained of the nature behind Midler's tweet
Mixed bag: Not everyone was put off by Midler's tweet, as one user said it endeared him to the entertainer
Another user echoed similar sentiments, pointing out that Midler was out of line in her criticism of Melania's past work,
'Now you've moved on to body Shaming? You? Honestly?' the user wrote. 'Is this what you want your daughter to be like as well. Teach her that if you disagree Politically that all bets are off when it comes to how you are as a human being? #Shameful.'
One user said Bette's razor sharp words had sullied a reputation built on decades of work in show business.
'I loved you for years,' the user wrote. 'Loved you in Beaches and Hocus Pocus. Now I'm done. I'm so sorry you have done this. This has nothing to do with politics. It's just wrong.'
Not everyone was put off by Midler's tweet, as one user wrote, 'I just love you 1,000 times more for this !!!!! Thank you queen!!!'
Grace under fire: Melania was at an event in the nation's capital Thursday to talk about cyberbullying and online civility
The star is known for being decidedly outspoken and has regularly used her social media account to share her thoughts on other public figures.
And in March 2016, she joined a host of critics - including Piers Morgan and Chloe Moretz - when she mocked Kim Kardashian for posing a nude snapshot online.
Taking to Twitter, the veteran performer wrote: 'Kim Kardashian tweeted a nude selfie today. If Kim wants us to see a part of her we've never seen, she's gonna have to swallow the camera.'
However, the Keeping Up With The Kardashians star opted against staying silent once she caught wind of the jab, writing back: 'Hey @BetteMidler I know it's past your bedtime but if you're still up and reading this send nudes #justkidding.'
