The embattled Today show has plunged to its lowest ratings since 2005.

OzTam data released on Tuesday revealed that the Nine breakfast show drew just 168,000 viewers in the all-important five metro cities overnight. 

Fourteen years ago, in January 2005, the program reach just 167,000 metro viewers - only 1000 less than on Monday.

It's the program's fourth lowest result ever in ratings period since OzTam ratings began. 

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Nine for comment. 

Arch rival Sunrise meanwhile continued its long lead, drawing in 287,000 metro viewers - a whopping 119,000 more people than Today.

It's an embarrassing result for Channel Nine executives, as hopes that the new Today show lineup would halt its downward spiral in the ratings continue to fade.
