Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight reveals season five is 'the best one yet'

Peaky Blinders Steven Knight has vowed that season five of the crime drama is 'the best one yet,' after recently revealing he has begun writing series six.

Speaking to the Radio Times the TV favourite revealed that the show will go from strength to strength with the latest instalment, adding that it will 'move on' after Tom Hardy departed the show last season.

It comes after Steven confirmed that he plans to end Peaky Blinders after its seventh series despite recent claims it would end after season five, explaining he wants the 'tale of two families' to conclude with the country on the eve of World War Two.

He said: 'I personally believe – and I think everybody involved believes – that this is the best series yet, for all sorts of reasons. There’s a lot going on, there’s a lot of bells ringing, there’s a lot of conflict happening.

'It’s like when [series one and two star] Sam Neill was no longer in it. That felt like a loss, but you move on. You have to.'

Tom Hardy sadly departed Peaky Blinders last series after his character Alfie Solomons was brutally killed off.

It comes after Steven recently told Slate that he's about to start work on the scripts for series six, admitting he's full of momentum to continue the story of Thomas Shelby (Cillian Murphy) and co.

Explaining why the BBC show is so important to him, Knight explained: 'Peaky is a very personal thing for me because it’s based on stories that I was told as a kid by my parents. At the very beginning, I tried to have other writers involved but it just didn’t work.

'There’s no writers room, or any other writer involved. I write everything from beginning to end. Maybe it’s just me not being able to let go of something, especially with Peaky. I can’t let it go.'

Knight, who also co-created quiz show Who Wants to be a Millionaire, continued: 'I’m about to start writing season 6 now and if all the wheels fall off, or it goes horribly wrong, there’s probably people that will say something. But at this moment, it has its own logic and momentum. Right now, it feels as if the characters are just writing themselves.'

It had been rumoured Peaky Blinders' fifth series could be its last, with Deadline reporting the upcoming series will see the story of the Shelby clan 'come to a conclusion'.

However, Knight confirmed in May last year, that the gangster drama will come to a close after the seventh season.

He told Digital Spy: 'My ambition is to make it a story of a family between two wars, so always I've wanted
