He's the AFL legend who is known for his laid-back persona.

And during a 9News interview on Friday, Dermott Brereton bizarrely took time out from an interview to rescue a rat.

Dressed casually and opting to go barefoot, the 54-year-old walked across a Melbourne field, urging the rodent to 'get into the shade'.

Dermott dressed down for the media interview in a brown polo shirt and blue and white striped board shorts.

He opted to go sans shoes, and his signature blonde locks were unkempt.

During the 9News interview that took place on an open field in Melbourne, Dermott stopped the taping to rescue a rat.
