Miley Cyrus has joked that her Disney alter-ego Hannah Montana disappeared from the public eye because she had 'a lot of drugs'.

The 26-year-old hitmaker was catapulted into the spotlight in 2006 when she starred on the sitcom, which followed Miley Stewart, a teenage girl leading a double life.

Her clean-cut character was attending school and doing her chores by day then transforming herself into famous pop singer Hannah Montana at night, a secret known only to her family and closest friends.

The popular series, which also starred her father Billy Ray Cyrus, was turned into a motion picture in 2009 before it ended in 2011. 

After the show, Miley truly bid adieu to the family-friendly character when she released her album Bangerz and notoriously twerked on Robin Thicke during a 2013 VMA performance of his hit Blurred Lines.

Now Miley hilariously reflected on her famous character during an appearance on RuPaul's Drag Race's season 11 premiere.

As two contestants, Soju and Kahanna Montrese, lip synced for their life to Hannah Montana's single The Best of Both Worlds, Ru asked Miley: 'Hey, whatever happened to her?'

To which the newly-married star quipped in without a beat: 'A lot of drugs.'

The comment left fellow judges Michelle Visage, Carson Kressley and Ross Mathews in stitches while RuPaul laughed: 'That won’t make the edit' - although it did.
