Love Island bosses have refuted claims that aftercare for contestants is inadequate, after former contestant Mike Thalassitis was found dead on Saturday aged 26.

The reality star - who appeared on the third series of the ITV2 programme in 2017 - was found hanged in a park in Edmonton, North London, and as previous contestants on the show payed tribute, some urged producers to offer more support to the stars.

In a statement released to MailOnline ITV bosses claimed that care for Islanders is 'taken very seriously and is a continuous process' after they also paid tribute to Mike.

The statement read: 'Care for our Islanders is a process the show takes very seriously and is a continuous process for all those taking part in the show.

'We ensure that all of our Contributors are able to access psychological support before, during and after appearing on the show. The programme will always provide ongoing support when needed and where appropriate.

'We also discuss at length with all of our Islanders, before and after the show, how their lives might change and they have access to support and advice to help with this.'

They also paid their condolences to Mike, sharing: 'Everyone at ITV2 and Love Island are shocked and saddened by the terrible news about Mike. Our thoughts and condolences are with his family and friends.'

It has been suggested that Mike was at the time struggling to come to terms with the death of his grandmother and had recently been dealing with debt. The reality TV star had moved in with the 94-year-old after her deteriorating health meant she needed a full time carer.

And this morning former Love Island contestant Montana Brown said that Thalassitis had been 'in a dark place' recently, wishing she had done more to help.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed this morning that the body of a man had been found at 9.28am on Saturday, with the circumstances around the death not considered to be suspicious.

A spokesman said: 'Officers and the London Ambulance Service attended and found a man, aged in his 20s, deceased. Police are in the process of informing the man's next of kin.'
