The Walking Dead: Winter arrives in Season 9 finale as Carol and Ezekiel's ...

The Walking Dead gave fans a bit of a misdirect, titling the final two episodes of Season 9 The Calm Before and The Storm.

While the season finales are often when multiple characters are killed off, it was the penultimate episode The Calm Before where 10 characters were killed off, while no characters were killed in The Storm.

While all of the main characters remained among the living, fans saw the death of the romance between Carol (Melissa McBride) and Ezekiel (Khary Payton), while Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) sought redemption while Alpha (Samantha Morton) prepares for the Whisperer War.

Last week's episode The Calm Before ended with Daryl (Norman Reedus), Michonne (Danai Gurira), Yumiko (Eleanor Matsuura) and Siddiq (Avi Nash) finding the heads of several beloved characters on spikes, marking the border of The Whisperers' turf.

One of the heads on these spikes were Henry (Matt Lintz), the son of Carol and Ezekiel, which ultimately lead to the end of her romance with Ezekiel.

Carol was seen looking at her adopted son's mementos in the aftermath of his brutal and grisly death.

The episode is bookended by Ezekiel delivering a speech through the radio, although in the opening moments of the episode, we don't know who he's talking to.

'Finally broke, and we can’t fix it,' he said. 'We kept trying to hold on. We did, but things fall apart. Cold set in, Fires raged, the rot spread. It’s knowing when to keep fighting and knowing when it’s over.'

As Ezekiel delivers this speech, members of The Kingdom are preparing to leave the community they love behind, with Daryl (Norman Reedus) approaching Lydia (Cassidy McClincy), giving her something to eat.

'If only for now. We need help, shelter from the storms to come. But we’ll never forget the magic we felt in this place. The love,' he said, as Ezekiel was seen rolling up the charter all the communities signed.

Michonne (Danai Gurira) and many others including Jerry (Cooper Andrews) all leave The Kingdom, all bundled up for the winter.

'As we head into an uncertain future, we must be valiant too. All of us, together,' Ezekiel concludes his speech with, as Ezekiel and Carol are seen closing the doors and leaving on horseback.

On the road, Ezekiel and Jerry are leading the group out front, while Michonne and Yumiiko say no one can agree on what to do next.

They haven't heard anything from Maggie, adding the Council sent a letter but haven’t heard anything back yet.

Also on the road was Lydia, whose inner conflict was teased all episode, as she knows many members of the group don't want her around.

When one member of the group voices his displeasure, Daryl tells him to back off, but Lydia says she doesn't want to cause anymore problems, but Daryl says it's 'their problem, not hers.'

Since Henry risked his life to save Lydia from her abusive mother, and Lydia refused to return to the Alphas, she blamed herself for Henry's death, a thread which ran throughout the whole episode.

Fans who have continually 'shipped' Carol and Daryl got a glimmer of hope, when Carol told Daryl that all she sees when she sees Lydia is Henry, her adoptive son.

But when Daryl asked what she sees when she looks at him, she simply replies, 'I see you,' and there seemed to be a 'moment' of sorts between them.

Jerry comes up to Ezekiel says there is a 'mother of a storm' coming, and Ezekiel says they have to travel through the night to get through before it hits.

Back in Alexandria, Father Gabriel Stokes (Seth Gilliam) was seen getting close to Rosita (Christian Serratos), who refers to the baby in her belly.

Eugene (Josh McDermitt) enters, mentioning something about 'winter storm protocol,' when Stokes mentions Negan, stating he will 'freeze to death' if they leave him in the basement prison.

Back on road, Daryl has a strange moment with Ezekiel, who said he was hoping for  a fresh start at Hilltop, adding it would be, 'easier if it was just us,' basically telling Daryl to give them some space.

Ezekiel says he’s not trying to be a bad guy, he just wants to get back a piece of what they lost, but when he asks if he can give him that, Daryl walks away without answering.

There was a very interesting scene with Lydia, who had gone off on her own while the group was on the road.

She came up to a zombie frozen in the snow, when she approaches and takes off her glove and pulls up her sleeve, holding her wrist to the zombie, essentially attempting suicide, but she stops when she sees Carol watching her.

As Carol and Lydia come back to the group, they're talking about a place they can take shelter before the next weigh station, with Michonne suggesting a familiar place: The Sanctuary.

Rosita, Stokes, Siddiq and Judith (Cailey Fleming) are down in Negan's quarters, where Judith says she's still worried about Dog because she doesn't know where he is.
