Just ask legendary 'Blue Wiggle' Anthony Field, who contracted a devastating illness most likely after high-fiving young fans at gigs. Speaking on Who magazine's celebrity podcast Who Are You on Thursday, the children's entertainer said he was infected with viral meningitis which left him unable to exercise for three years. The devastating illness left him unable to exercise for three years 'I got viral meningitis, which the doctors say I probably got from the audience, high-fiving children and not using the hand sanitiser,' Anthony, 55, said. 'That was dreadful. It was two to three years ago, and now I've just started getting back into exercise. It really laid me low.' The star Wiggle has certainly been in the wars throughout his career, having also suffered from depression and crippling anxiety attacks. 'I got viral meningitis, which the doctors say I probably got from the audience, high-fiving children and not using the hand sanitiser,' Anthony (far right), 55, told Who magazine's celebrity podcast Who Are You on Thursday And in June last year, he returned to Australia after injuring himself while on tour in the U.S. and ending up in hospital. Anthony shared a photo of himself to Instagram, posing with his bandmates on a plane at Sydney Airport with his nose in plaster. He captioned the picture: '"Smashed it" on tour and I'm not talking about the shows! Great fun overseas, great to be back! No revolving doors!' 'That was dreadful. It really laid me low,' Anthony added Anthony had received 12 stitches at Boston's Tuft Medical Center after colliding with a glass door. Despite his nasty injury, he went to perform two sold-out shows with The Wiggles in Boston afterwards. Anthony, who once sang in rock band The Cockroaches, has been the darling of parents and toddlers for decades for his uplifting work with The Wiggles. He has been married to wife Michaela Patisteas for 16 years and the couple share three children - daughters Lucia, 15, and Marie, 13, and son Antonio, 11.
