Dame Barbara Windsor's husband of 19 years has revealed the actress's confidence has begun to fade as she battles Alzheimer's.   

In an interview with close friend and radio presenter Chris Evans, husband Scott Mitchell, 56, described the emotional journey following his wife's Alzheimer's diagnosis and how he would be raising money for the charity Dementia Revolution. 

Scott is set to run the London Marathon with the Carry On star's former colleagues in order to raise money for dementia research.

The iconic British actress, 81, was diagnosed with the degenerative disease in 2014 but she and Scott only decided to publicly reveal the diagnosis five months ago. 

Scott first noticed his wife struggle with her memory just before she was about to leave EastEnders in 2010. 

Describing the moment he knew his wife was battling more than just the effects of old age, Scott said the actress's confidence began to fade.

In an interview shared by The Sun he said: 'One of the things that I noticed is that her confidence started going, terribly.

He added: 'And that affected her in ways such as not knowing what to wear, or she couldn't do her make-up — she always did a brilliant make-up and was always able to turn herself out as Barbara. She just lost confidence.' 

As the disease began to take hold of the soap star, Scott said that his wife became a 'diluted' version of herself and would struggle to carry out actions. 

He added: 'She lost her sense of that fun and that joyful thing that Barbara had.'
