He's launched a successful music career after 30 years in the acting industry.

But Kiefer Sutherland claimed he still has to deal with 'heartbreak and disappointment' in life, regardless of how 'fortunate' he has been in his career.

Speaking on this week's Jonathan Ross Show, the screen star, 52, said he began writing music when he was appearing as Jack Bauer in 24, but he felt he had to live a 'certain amount of life' before anything he had to say was 'worth listening to'.

Kiefer said: 'I didn't wake up one day and say, "Today I'm going to make a record." They are songs from my life.

'People will ask me why I didn't do this earlier. For me, specifically, I had to live a certain amount of my life before I felt anything I had to say was worth anyone else listening to.'

The Pompeii star went on to explain how he 'considers himself one of the luckiest people' he knows - but he still has to get through 'this thing called life'.

He said: 'I consider myself one of the luckiest people I know; I've been able to do what I love for a living, I've financially been secure for quite some time, I've been able to raise my family without the stress that a lot of other people have.
