Louis Smith EXC: Former Strictly winner admits he'd feel like a MORON if he ...

He took home the glitterball trophy in 2012 with his professional partner Flavia Cacace.

And, in an exclusive interview with MailOnline, former Strictly Come Dancing champion Louis Smith revealed that he'd feel like a MORON if he replaced outgoing judge Darcey Bussell on the panel, after she announced her departure from the BBC show last week.

The Olympic gymnast, 30 - and proud pet owner - discussed his thoughts on who should take her place as he was unveiled as the face of Huawei's new campaign with the RSPCA to help find 'furever' homes for unadopted animals in the UK.

Louis admitted that news of Darcey Bussell's departure from Strictly brought on 'mixed emotions,' but insisted he felt secure that producers would find a 'worthy' replacement.

He told MailOnline: 'I have mixed emotions. She did so well. She brought a lot to the show. She brought an element of class, which represents Strictly well.

'She was very credible, given her background and her profession, and she's a lovely person as well. So, it's sad that she's leaving, however, I wish her all of the luck in the world.

'Strictly have always been amazing at picking judges, and always seem to know the right people to fill the spots that free up, whether that be the professional dancers, the presenters or the judges. So I have faith that Strictly will pick someone worthy [to fill Darcey's place].'

Louis admitted that, while he himself 'probably could' replace Darcey on the judging panel, he ruled out take up the offer if it came his way in the immediate future, to protect his 'credibility'.

Instead, the former Strictly winner revealed that he'd definitely consider becoming a judge on the BBC show, if he took a year to 'research and learn' the things required to critique contestants.

'I'd have to brush up on the craft and knowledge before I could start critiquing people, and things like that.

'I probably could do it, but I'd need to spend a year working very hard in terms of understanding the sport and the competition side, the technique, before I could start critiquing people, or I'd feel like a bit of a hypocrite or a moron, not knowing much and then critiquing people.

'For my own credibility I couldn't accept it right now [if an offer came his way], however if I'd be considered in the future I'd happily take the time to research and learn about ballroom and latin, and then come back.'
