He sits down with Australian celebrities and other high-profile individuals on Channel Seven's controversial talk show, Interview.

And ahead of the show's return on Tuesday night, Andrew Denton, 58, has opened up about the one interview he still feels 'terrible' about almost 16 years later.

The television legend told News.com.au on Tuesday he 'upset' the late veteran White House reporter, Helen Thomas when he sat down with her in Washington in 2003.

'I went to Washington to interview her, and her husband had died, and she'd nursed him as he died,' he recalled.

'I don't remember the explicit question that I asked, but it was a very personal question about that, and she got very upset, and she said, 'This is what you came for, isn’t it!'

Andrew went on to reveal the pair met up for dinner shortly after their awkward exchange.

During the meal, the Enough Rope star said he offered Ms Thomas a heartfelt apology for causing her 'distress' during their interview.
