Karl Stefanovic has been notably absent from Channel Nine programming since he was axed from the Today show in December 2018.

But the 44-year-old made a surprise return to the network on Sunday night as a talking head on countdown show 20 To One.

Karl's appearance was not announced beforehand and it's unclear when he filmed the segments.

During the show, Karl reacted to famous television adverts.

At one stage, he joked that he once owned a Squatty Potty toilet stool and it found it to be 'very effective'.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Channel Nine for comment.
