Line of Duty's Lennie James reveals Jed Mercurio planned dramatic return for Detective Chief Inspector Tony Gates... but then scrapped scenes

Lennie James has revealed the mastermind behind Line of Duty, Jed Mercurio, planned a dramatic return for his character Detective Chief Inspector Tony Gates. 

Walking the BAFTAs red carpet on Sunday night, the actor, 53, told Lorraine's Dan Wootton Jed had incorporated the DCI back into the series five script before deciding to pull the scenes.   

Responding to fan theories Gates could appear in series six, Lennie said anything is possible- despite the police office coming to a grisly end in the series one finale.

He said: 'Every single time I see Jed he talks about how he's just written the scene that's brought me back to Line of Duty. 

'Then the next time I see it, he said "yeah it was rubbish, so I got rid of it."

Lennie elaborated with Digital Spy: 'God's honest truth, when I was filming Critical he came in one day and said, "I've just written a scene where Tony Gates comes back" and I was like, "yes,
