The finale of Game of Thrones drew a mixed reaction from fans on Monday.

But the show's last episode was a roaring commercial success for pay TV provider Foxtel as it brought in a record-breaking 1.076 million viewers, Mumbrella reported.

The figure - which did not take into account on-demand viewers - beat the record of 719,000 set by Australia and New Zealand's 2011 Rugby World Cup semi-final.

Online ratings for Game of Thrones were equally spectacular, with 471,000 fans choosing to stream the show through an internet connection.

OzTam also recorded the highest On Demand VPM (video player measurement) in the history of Australian TV at 432,000.

The data suggests a total of about 1.5million viewers tuned in to watch the final dramatic twists of the hit fantasy TV
