Last year, Peter Stefanovic and his brother Karl were embroiled in the 'Ubergate' scandal after their private phone conversation in a taxi was leaked to the press. 

And now, Peter, 37, spoke candidly about his feelings of shame and embarrassment following the scandal.

'I was embarrassed, I was ashamed about it all too because I got my network into trouble,' he told The Herald Sun on Saturday. 

'I got my wife [Sylvia Jeffreys] and brother [Karl] into trouble; and I took that really hard,' the former Weekend Today host added.

Peter explained that apologising for the incident was the 'right thing to do' and that he is now in a better place.

'I apologised, which was the right thing to do and got things back on track again, but I’m in a pretty good place, a really good place actually,' he said. 

After departing from Channel Nine, Peter is preparing his return to television after landing a hosting gig for crime documentary series, Lawyer X.
