He has talked openly this week about his battle with drugs and alcohol after moving to Los Angeles in 2015.
And Australian singer Conrad Sewell, 31, has revealed it was only recently that he felt able to write songs about his personal struggles.
'I had to get to this point personally where I could open up this much,' he told The Daily Telegraph as his debut album Life topped the ARIA chart.

While his previous hits like Start Again were fully-fledged love songs, his releases from last year like Come Clean and Love Me Anyway feature noticeably darker lyrics.
The former includes the line 'put down the booze and cocaine', while the latter opens with 'liquor and drugs will never be enough, it's just temporary highs'.
In his latest interview, Conrad said he has now refocused his life after signing with Sony Music Australia in 2018.
