EastEnders FIRST LOOK: Lee MacDonald makes his debut on the Square

Lee MacDonald has been seen in Albert Square for the first time after it was revealed he is joining the cast of EastEnders.

The actor, 50, will play Terry in the BBC Soap in his first major TV role for 32 years since starring in Grange Hill.

Lee will no doubt be hoping that this new role is a bit more family friendly after confessing that playing drug addict Zammo in Grange Hill 'ruined his career'.

Lee's Grange Hill character Samuel Maguire was fondly known as cheeky chappy Zammo, who attended the fictional north London school between 1982 and 1987.

The actor featured in the show's most famous - albeit controversial - storyline when Zammo spiralled into an addiction to heroin, which climaxed in an overdose scene.

And despite being a household name because of the show, Lee claims that he struggled to find any work afterwards as potential employers didn't want to be associated with drug use.

Speaking to The Sun, Lee explained: 'I was leaving Grange Hill but earning reasonable money doing personal appearances in clubs and places like that.'

'But then I got a call and they said, "We're not going to use you any more".

'I was like, "What?" And they said they didn't want their nightclubs to be associated with a drug addict.'

His EastEnders role looks to be a bit more lighthearted, however, as he will play bus driver Terry, who will clash with pub landlord Mick Carter (Danny Dyer) when they both try to win gig tickets.

Lee will reportedly appear in two episodes this summer, but is hoping to return.
